XOR tutorial with TensorFlow

Now that we have defined everything we need, we’ll create a training function. As an input, we will pass model, criterion, optimizer, X, y and a number of iterations. Then, we will create a list where we will store the loss for each epoch. We will create a for loop that will iterate for each epoch in the range of iteration.

As parameters we will pass model_AND.parameters(), and we will set the learning rate to be equal to 0.01. Now you should be able to understand the following code which solves the XORproblem. It defines a neural network with two input neurons, xor neural network 2 neurons ina first hidden layer and 2 output neurons. In our X-OR problem, output is either 0 or 1 for each input sample. We will use binary cross entropy along with sigmoid activation function at output layer.[Ref image 6].

These arrays will represent the binary input for the AND operator. Then, we will create an output array y, and we will set the data type to be equal to np.float32. The XOR-Problem is a classification problem, where you only have four datapoints with two features. The training set and the test set are exactlythe same in this problem. So the interesting question is only if the model isable to find a decision boundary which classifies all four points correctly.

Introduction to Neural Networks

The trick is to realise that we can just logically stack two perceptrons. A neural network is essentially a series of hyperplanes (a plane in N dimensions) that group / separate regions in the target hyperplane. The XOR function is the simplest (afaik) non-linear function. Is is impossible to separate True results from the False https://forexhero.info/ results using a linear function. In my next post, I will show how you can write a simple python program that uses the Perceptron Algorithm to automatically update the weights of these Logic gates. Neural nets used in production or research are never this simple, but they almost always build on the basics outlined here.

Activation Function

Then, we will obtain our prediction h3 by applying model AND on h1 and h2. First, we’ll create the data for the logical operator AND. First, we will create our decision table were x1 and x2 are two NumPy arrays consisting of four numbers.

  1. Sounds like we are making real improvements here, but a linear function of a linear function makes the whole thing still linear.
  2. XOR, which stands for exclusive OR, is a logical operation that takes two binary inputs and returns true if exactly one of the inputs is true.
  3. The next step is to initialize weights and biases randomly.
  4. If we change weights on the next step of gradient descent methods, we will minimize the difference between output on the neurons and training set of the vector.
  5. The classic multiplication algorithm will have complexity as O(n3).

We can plot the hyperplane separation of the decision boundaries. The sigmoid is a smooth function so there is no discontinuous boundary, rather we plot the transition from True into False. It is very important in large networks to address exploding parameters as they are a sign of a bug and can easily be missed to give spurious results. It is also sensible to make sure that the parameters and gradients are cnoverging to sensible values. Furthermore, we would expect the gradients to all approach zero.

It happened due to the fact their x coordinates were negative. Note every moved coordinate became zero (ReLU effect, right?) and the orange’s non negative coordinate was zero (just like the black’s one). The black and orange points ended up in the same place (the origin), and the image just shows the black dot.

The choice appears good for solving this problem and can also reach to a solution easily. “Activation Function” is a function that generates an output to the neuron, based on its inputs. Although there are several activation functions, I’ll focus on only one to explain what they do. Let’s meet the ReLU (Rectified Linear Unit) activation function. In this representation, the first subscript of the weight means “what hidden layer neuron output I’m related to? The second subscript of the weight means “what input will multiply this weight?

Gradient descent is an iterative optimization algorithm for finding the minimum of a function. To find the minimum of a function using gradient descent, we can take steps proportional to the negative of the gradient of the function from the current point. Now that we have a fair recall of the logistic regression models, let us use some linear classifiers to solve some simpler problems before moving onto the more complex XOR problem. We are also using supervised learning approach to solve X-OR using neural network.

Now, this value is fed to a neuron which has a non-linear function(sigmoid in our case) for scaling the output to a desirable range. The scaled output of sigmoid is 0 if the output is less than 0.5 and 1 if the output is greater than 0.5. Our main aim is to find the value of weights or the weight vector which will enable the system to act as a particular gate. In the case of XOR problem, unsupervised learning techniques like clustering or dimensionality reduction can be used to find patterns in data without any labeled examples.

These adjustable parameters help the neural network to determine the function that needs to be computed by the network. In terms of activation function in neural networks, the higher the activation value is the greater the activation is. By using multi-layer feedforward neural networks, we can solve complex problems like image recognition or natural language processing that require non-linear decision boundaries. A large number of methods are used to train neural networks, and gradient descent is one of the main and important training methods.
