Jetavanaramaya

Located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Jetavanaramaya is one of the most remarkable Buddhist monuments in Sri Lanka. This towering stupa is not only a sacred religious site but also a stunning example of the island’s ancient engineering and architecture. Jetavanaramaya is a deeply sacred site for Buddhists, as it is believed to enshrine relics of Lord Buddha.

Jetavanaramaya was built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD. Standing at around 122 meters when it was first constructed, it was once the tallest stupa in the world and the third tallest structure of the ancient world after the Egyptian pyramids. Even today, it remains one of the largest brick structures ever built.

The stupa was constructed using millions of baked bricks, showcasing the incredible skills of ancient Sri Lankan builders. The vast dome rises above the ruins of old monastic buildings and creates a breathtaking view against the blue skies of Anuradhapura. A guided tour can give you a deeper understanding of its history while a quiet walk at sunrise or sunset offers a truly spiritual experience.
