Thuparamaya, Anuradhapura – First Stupa of Sri Lanka

Anuradhapura Moonstone

Thuparamaya was built during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BC. It was constructed to enshrine the right collarbone relic of Lord Buddha, brought to Sri Lanka by Arahat Mahindu Thero, who introduced Buddhism to the country. Since then, this sacred stupa has stood as a symbol of peace, devotion and faith.

Located in the sacred city of Anuradhapura, Thuparamaya is known as the first stupa built in Sri Lanka after the arrival of Buddhism. It holds deep historical and spiritual importance, making it one of the must visit sites for anyone exploring the island’s ancient heritage.

The stupa has a distinctive bell shaped design (known as dagoba) which was later restored several times throughout history. The structure is surrounded by beautiful stone pillars, believed to have supported a protective roof in ancient times. The simplicity of its design and the calm surroundings make Thuparamaya a peaceful spot for meditation and reflection.
