The Leopard Kingdom of Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan leopards

Wilpattu National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful wildlife destinations. Located in the northwest of the island, it is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and is famously known as the Leopard Kingdom.

The park is well known for its Sri Lankan leopards, one of the rarest leopard subspecies in the world. Leopards in Wilpattu move freely around natural water lakes called Villus, increasing the chance of spotting them in their natural habitat. Wilpattus landscape is unique. Dense forests, open grasslands and natural Villus create a perfect environment for wildlife and birds. These water lakes attract animals throughout the day.

During a safari, visitors may see leopards, elephants, sloth bears, deer, water buffalo, crocodiles and many bird species. Wilpattu is also an excellent destination for bird watching. The best time to visit Wilpattu National Park is from February to October, especially during early morning safaris when animal activity is high.
