The Best Time to See Blue Whales

Blue Whales

The whale watching season in Mirissa has officially begun and it’s one of the most exciting times to visit Sri Lanka’s south coast. From November onwards the Indian Ocean becomes calm and clear, creating the perfect conditions to spot the majestic Blue Whale, the largest animal on Earth.

As the new season opens, travelers once again have the chance to enjoy early morning boat rides, beautiful sea views, and unforgettable encounters with whales and dolphins. Mirissa is Sri Lanka’s most famous whale watching destination. It sits close to a deep ocean trench where blue whales frequently pass during their feeding and migration period.

Whale watching in Mirissa usually begins just after sunrise. Boats leave the harbour around 6.00 AM, heading into the open ocean as the sky turns golden. A typical tour lasts 3–4 hours and it’s a peaceful, scenic experience from start to finish.
